Functional Medicine

The Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides educational programs for physicians. Dr. Wiese has attended continuing medical education courses offered by IFM. The coursework provides practitioners interested in impacting the prevention and treatment of chronic disease, a bridge between cutting edge scientific research and clinical practice.

Chronic disease is an interaction between individual genetic vulnerabilities (comprising 20-30% of chronic disease risk) and lifestyle/nutritional factors (comprising 70-80% of the risk).

Functional medicine is a dynamic approach to assessing, preventing and treating complex chronic disease. It expands medical thinking beyond the diagnosis and the prescription pad, and uses the patient's story to uncover the underlying imbalances of the body, imbalances that often can be impacted by lifestyle and nutritional interventions.
